Haiti is currently grappling with intense crises, as escalating violence, political instability, and humanitarian challenges deeply impact daily life. Reporting on the ground can be dangerous, and often, taking photos from the car became the only safe way to capture these moments. This approach allowed for a glimpse into the resilience and struggles of the Haitian people while navigating complex and volatile areas. Below are photos taken during our reporting trip to Haiti in August and September, as we worked on our YouTube video, Inside Haiti’s Crisis: Government Fights to Take Back Power from Gangs.

In the heart of Port-au-Prince, amid growing gang violence, Haiti's government faces urgent security challenges. Prime Minister Garry Conille leads high-stakes meetings in some of the city’s most dangerous areas, strategizing with officials on how to restore order and protect civilians. These meetings are a bold response to the mounting threats posed by gangs that now control vast portions of the capital, as the government grapples with securing neighborhoods and reclaiming critical areas from violent groups.
Haiti faces a severe gang violence crisis, with local police often outmatched by heavily armed criminal groups controlling large parts of the country. In response, Kenyan military forces have joined efforts to restore security and support Haitian police operations. Working together, they aim to reclaim gang-held territories, stabilize communities, and restore order. This collaboration marks a significant international effort to address Haiti’s escalating violence and improve safety for civilians.

Daily life in Haiti is marked by a blend of resilience and hardship as the country grapples with ongoing political instability, economic challenges, and natural disaster recovery. Many citizens face difficulties due to high unemployment rates and inflation, which have led to a rise in food insecurity. Access to basic services, such as healthcare and education, remains limited, particularly in rural areas. Street vendors and small-scale entrepreneurs navigate an uncertain landscape, striving to sustain their families amidst the chaos. Additionally, the pervasive influence of gang violence in urban areas further complicates daily existence, forcing communities to confront safety concerns while fostering solidarity and mutual support among neighbors.
